Central bull rearing station
Since the fall of 2007 we have operated a central bull rearing/testing program on our farm. Currently all the Canadian Luing breeders retaining bulls are sending us weaned calves to be reared in a comparative group on an all-forage system. Having the bulls at a central location allows customers the convenience of viewing and comparing all the available Luing bulls knowing that they have been reared under identical conditions.
Being a numerically smaller breed this offers a unique opportunity for members to co-operate for the constructive development of our breed rather than competing with each other to produce the heaviest yearling weights by being the most skillful feeder. Rearing all the bulls together ensures that we are comparing apples to apples - there are no favorites and no show cattle - they are all reared commercially and if they are not good enough they get banded and enter our grass-fed beef program.
We aim to develop bulls to sell at 20-24 months of age although the occasional larger bull may be sold as a yearling to meet customer requirements. The bulls are reared on an all-forage diet using hay/silage in winter and our intensively managed tame pastures in summer. We are growing the bulls out slowly for two reasons - to maximize longevity and to identify those that perform best under a foraging system. Most ranchers maintain their cowherds on forage so logically the bulls that will breed the type of replacements they want should also be proven under a foraging system rather than the grain-based feedlot program most bulls enjoy. We weigh and condition score the cattle periodically and are building up a data bank of information that will help guide our future breeding and selection decisions.
