History

Luing cattle were first imported to Canada in 1973 by the late A.R. "Sandy" Cross of Rothney Farm, Calgary. At Rothney, the Luings flourished among Sandy's already world-renowned herds of Shorthorn and Galloway cattle. Other Canadian Luing breeders in the early days included the Churchs at Lochend, Lufts at Kathyrn, Sears at Nanton, Wearmouths at Cochrane and Wolfendens at Brisco, British Columbia.

An important contribution to the development of the Luing breed in Canada came in the late 1970s with the infusion, through a grade register, of "Snowlander" bloodlines. Snowlander cattle were developed by Charlie Flick in the 1930s by crossing a polled Dairy Shorthorn bull with his herd of Highland cows. The cattle were then bred up in much the same way as the Cadzow's Luings. The Snowlanders had the advantage of being polled and, like the Luings, were excellent foragers due to the tough environment of the ranch at Edgewood, British Columbia. The cattle survived on a diet of browse which grew among the tall timber on the rocky mountain sides. Charlie and his grandson Dave Bilinski were active breeders of Luing/Snowlander cattle and their entries at the Annual sales were always keenly bid on.

The Canadian Luing Cattle Association was incorporated in 1975 with its objective being the encouragement, development and regulation of the breeding of Luing cattle in Canada.

Over the years, Luings have proven themselves hardy, long-lived, productive mother cows on some of the toughest ranches in Western Canada.
